Troopers save man in diabetic shock

Pasco County (FOX 13) -
Chris Henry had something nice to say, so he said it in a letter.

"Two Florida Highway Patrol officers saved my life last night," he wrote to the state police.

He was driving home on  Friday night at 10:00 p.m.

"I had a medical emergency which caused me to start driving erratically," he said. "I was dazed, confused, didn't know where I was. I think I probably went on the shoulder of the road a few times."

He was on County Line Road near Pasco County.

"(I thought) I'm either going to get into a bad accident, I'm going to hurt somebody. I pulled my vehicle off the road completely, hit the stop button on it, and sat there."

Nearly three hours passed before Sgt. Cosmas Edwards drove up and saw the vehicle.

"I was going to check on it," he said.

Trooper. Steve Pohorence arrived soon after.

"Not everyone who does this job is out to give people tickets or to take people to jail," he said.

Henry has Type I diabetes, and made the mistake of trying to wait until he got home to eat dinner.

The troopers knocked on the window and started asking questions.

"I can hear me answering those questions like a drunk person would," said Henry.

He was able to show the troopers his blood test kit, which showed his blood sugar was dangerously low.

They gave him a Power Bar and a sandwich.

Within minutes, the hypoglycemic incident was over and they drove him home.

Henry wrote to the state police to make sure first responders of all stripes get their due.

"I did not expect him to contact the news, to write the letter that he did," said Pohorence. "We saved his life, yes, but it was our job to do what we did."

Henry asks himself what would've happened if they'd never stopped?

"Those men insured my six-year-old daughter would have a daddy today," he wrote. "For that, there are not words to thank them enough."

He found the words, after they found him.
