TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Tampa Police say a toddler was hit and killed by a City of Tampa Water Department vehicle at an apartment complex Thursday night.

It happened shortly after 8:30 p.m. at the Tampa Parks Apartments at E. 7th Ave and Nuccio Parkway.

The family has identified the little boy as two-year-old Demetrick Lindsey.

Tampa Police said the child was in his babysitter's arms when suddenly he jumped out and darted into the street. At the same time the driver of the vehicle, now identified as 48-year-old Robert Fennell, was exiting the apartment complex.

Police said Fennell was driving slowly, but didn't see the toddler run into the road, and ended up hitting him.

When he realized what happened, Fennell got out of the car and rushed to help Demetrick. Officials at the scene said a security guard was performing CPR when they arrived.

Demetrick was taken to the hospital where he later passed away.

Police detectives are still investigating, but so far, they said Fennell has not been cited for the accident.

FOX 13 will continue with updates as they become available.
