An Apollo Beach couple feels the need for speed, on the water. Consider the Belfattos a power "boat" couple.
"My husband and I both are speed junkies,” says Cynthia Belfatto. "We love speed, we love the water, we love fast cars and fast boats."
Cynthia and Craig Belfatto consider the P1 Superstock Championship: NASCAR on the water. The boats are all set up the same, so winning comes down to skill.
"This has been a dream of mine but I really couldn't afford to get into the big million dollar class,” Craig says. "This class is really affordable. For under $10,000, you can lease a boat."
2013 was the Belfatto's rookie Superstock USA season. They finished second in points, missing the top spot by just one point.
This season, the couple goes for the title and updates the message posted on the back of their boat: "You've just been passed by a girl...again!!!"
The most challenging part of racing together as a married couple? Surviving Turn 1.
"All the boats come together, they're similar speeds. So you've got to make a move at the first turn,” Cynthia said.
"There's nine boats heading for that one pin,” Craig adds. “Who's gonna let off, and who's gonna just go through it?"
Cynthia controls the throttle, Craig drives, and you can bet the Belfattos aim to make it to that pin first.
Cynthia says communication is one key to their success.
"We have awesome communication. It works well for us. I couldn't imagine having another partner in the boat," she says.
The Powerboat P1 Superstock series runs this weekend, August 23rd and 24th, off Cocoa Beach. The Belfattos plan to leave everyone else in their wake on the Grand Prix of the seas.
