Ga. BOE votes on snacks in school

Posted: Updated:

The Georgia Board of Education voted 9-1 Thursday in favor of an exemption to national snack food guidelines.

Under the decision, Georgia schools will be allowed to sell unhealthy snack foods as part of fundraisers. These fundraisers, however, will be limited to 30 events a year per school. Each fundraiser can last no longer than three days.

Opponents of the measure say it will undo the work done so far to reduce childhood obesity. Georgia currently ranks tenth in the nation for overweight children.

Board members say the federal government should not be telling local school districts what's best for them.
