Gesner Street Fire Victims Laid To Rest

Posted: Updated:

It was a painful day for relatives and friends of four children killed in a fire in Southwest Philadelphia.

The young victims were laid to rest today, more than a month after the tragedy.

The distraught mother of 4-year-old twins Marie and Mariallah Bowah cry out for her girls killed in last month's Gesner Street fire along with 4-year-old Patrick Sanyeah and 7-week-old Taj Jacque, as the tiny coffins are carried out following a joint funeral.

The boys' uncle Preston Jacque says his nephews were bright and very very loved. He carried baby Taj's tiny casket so he could hold his nephew one more time.

"That's how I held him when I was taking him out of the hospital. When I was putting him in the car so I wanted that to be a symbol this is my baby," he said.

The children were killed in a massive fire that engulfed nearly a dozen homes on Gesner Street in Southwest Philly July 5th. In its aftermath street protests by members of the Liberian community sparked by rumors of a delayed response by firefighters, claims disputed by city officials. Friday investigators announcing the cause of the fire as undetermined...the twins' father says he still has questions.

"I want the government to investigate what happened how it happened. I want to know how it happened," said Pennoh Davis

"We still want to know the actual cause of the fire so we will wait till we hear from the task force set up by City Council," said Dahn Kepayea Dennis of the Liberian Association of Pennsylvania.

The president of the states' Liberian association says the community will wait to hear more from the city before deciding how to respond. City commissioners attended to show support for the families.

"We just wanted to make sure the family knew we were here and we are committed to helping them in anyway," said Marshall Freeman of the Commission on Human Relations.

Meantime the boy's uncle thanked the public for helping his family cope.

"The city the community the kids young folks coming out to support our family we appreciate everything they have done," he said.
