The video of a couple security guards pushing and allegedly pepper spraying a guy in Centro Ybor last Friday may just be the tip of the iceberg.
"From what I'm seeing in the video I'm not seeing anything that would justify the force he's using," said attorney Bill Wynne.
Wynne represents Matthew Roberts. Roberts' family reached out to FOX 13 after seeing our story. He claims to also have had a run-in with the same big security guard back in February. He says he and his friends were in Centro Ybor when the guards started shouting and acting aggressive.
"At one point my client turned around. ‘Why are you treating me this way?' At that point, the large security guard sprayed him in the face with pepper spray," Wynne said.
A police report was filed, but a month later. The case is considered inactive.
"It looks like there's one security guard that can be very dangerous and do harm to the public, but I would also say it seems like it could be a larger problem," Wynne said.
"They've been overly rough. I've seen them out here," Shayne Tiggett said.
Tiggett lives in Ybor City. He, along with several others there who wouldn't go on camera, says this is nothing new.
"You don't need to put your hands on anybody to get them to move. You ask them to move, you don't have to put your hands on them or pepper spray them," he said.
Universal Protection Services, which employs the two guards in the video, has removed them from Centro Ybor, pending their ongoing internal investigation. The company is also investigating other complaints against its security guards.
