Sarasota company messes with mosquitoes' minds

Posted: Updated:

Tiny, bloodthirsty mosquitoes weigh a mere milligram, but they bother bigger beings at the top of the food chain.

Female mosquitoes breed by the hundreds, bite at will, and endanger human health. Forget your fears of sharks, snakes, and bears:

"Mosquitoes will cause 30 times more deaths than all of those animals put together," explained the University of Florida's Phil Koehler, Ph.D.

Humans have tried everything to build a buffer -- repellent sprays, citronella candles, even an app that supposedly drives mosquitoes away with sound.

One new product tries a different tactic.

"There's no DEET, there's no chemicals at all. It's all botanical," explained John Harlin, the CEO of a Sarasota company called Eversafe.

Eversafe's product actually attracts mosquitoes. It reels them in, but isn't a trap.

The pyramid contains a granular mix. When activated with water, the crystals first mimic human sweat. Then, they emit a botanical blend that targets the one-track mind of blood-sucking female mosquitoes.

"It confuses her receptors," Harlin continued.

Beyond confusion, Eversafe claims the cocktail alters her appetite -- scrambling her brain so badly, she'll no longer bite for blood.

"It changes her eating habits. She goes back to nectar," Harlin stated.

And without blood, her babies will starve to death.

This instinct-erasing pyramid costs $15 to $17 and lasts a week. Refills are half price.

Harlin says the best place for the Eversafe isn't right next to you. It's actually 20 feet away. And someplace shady, because that's where mosquitoes are most comfortable.

"One of these in the backyard does 15,000 square feet," he claimed.

The Meadows Country Club was among the first to try Eversafe.

"The next day they were gone and they didn't come back," the club's Doug Domino said.

Right now, Eversafe is sold online. The company says Home Depot will soon begin carrying it.
