ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) - Another Rays star has been traded for prospects. FOX Sports reports pitcher David Price, a former Cy Young Award winner, was shipped to Detroit just minutes before the league's trade deadline.

The trade was part of a three-team deal involving Seattle that sent pitcher Drew Smyly and infielder Nick Franklin to the Rays. FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported that the Tigers' "highly regarded" minor-league shortstop Willy Adames was also headed to the Rays as part of the deal.

The Mariners get Detroit outfielder Austin Jackson.

Price was the first overall pick in the 2007 draft by the Rays.  Weeks ago, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that the 28-year-old would be on the trade block. After all, he becomes a free agent after next season, and the team historically has traded players in his situation at the deadline under the "getting something is better than nothing" mantra.

But then the Rays started winning. As of Thursday, they were only five and a half games out of the last wild card spot.

That prompted many fans to hope that the Rays would hang onto the popular Price, now in his seventh season with the team. The hashtags "#keepprice," "#wewantprice," and even "#stayaray" were popular on Twitter.

But with Price headed to the Motor City, the question becomes whether the team will be able to continue competing for a spot in the postseason.

"Trading David Price now would completely pop the Rays' 'playoff balloon,'" FOX 13's Kevin O'Donnell tweeted before the trade was announced. "Rays were 4.5 out of a wild card spot when they traded Scott Kazmir [in] '09. They tanked, finishing 11 games out of the WC. Price would be worse."

A prolific Twitter user, David Price tweeted thanks to his fans late this afternoon:

"wow...what a day!! Rays fans THANK YOU!! Great Chapter of my life just ended...ready to start a new one with the Tigers!! Thanks again"
