Police: Woman Faces Charges In Drug Overdose Death

Posted: Updated:
DREXEL HILL, Pa. -

A Delaware County woman is facing murder charges in connection to the death of her boyfriend.

FOX 29's Dave Schratwieser reports.

Friends of 58-year-old Fiore Caputo of Drexel Hill will always remember him as a good guy, a neighbor with a kind heart, who everybody loved.

“He was like the don of the neighborhood, he was our friend, my husband's best friend,” said the victim’s friend Mary D. “Anything I asked him to do for me, he would do."

Caputo died suddenly in April in his bedroom at a Drexel Hill apartment he shared with 36-year-old Jacqueline Scala on Hiawatha Lane. The medical examiner has now ruled his death a homicide. The medical examiner say the cause was a heroin overdose. Police say Scala bought the heroin and injected it.

“She had gone into Overbrook to buy some heroin and brought it back, she would inject him,” Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood.

Scala is the first person charged in Upper Darby under a state law that says anyone who intentionally administers, delivers or dispenses illegal drugs that cause a death can be charged with the equivalent of a third degree homicide.

“This is kinda saying you inject, you sell dope, you get caught , we can prove a case. You're gonna get locked up,” said Chitwood.

Chitwood says 26 people have died from heroin overdoses in Upper Darby in the last three years. 142 others have overdosed on heroin, but survived.

"Heroin is the number one drug problem in society today,” he said.

Neighbors were glad to hear of Scala's arrest. They miss their friend and they want justice for his death.

Under the state law Scala faces a mandatory minimum of 5 years in prison, but she could be sentenced to up to 40 years. Chitwood says Scala admitted injecting Caputo with 9 to 12 bags of heroin in a single day.
