Details Emerging About Potential Motive In Mercy Fitzgerald Shooting

Posted: Updated:

More details are emerging about a possible motive in the deadly incident at a Delaware County Hospital campus.

49-year old Richard Plotts is accused in the attack yesterday at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital.

What set him off?

Investigators say a lot of things, but Richard B. Plotts was deeply offended by signs at Fitzgerald Mercy declaring a 'Gun Free Zone.' They say he packed dozens of rounds of ammunition, his, 32 and a plan for murder that was thwarted.

Investigators believe his plan failed because his doctor also had a weapon of his own, and became a hero.

Dr. Lee Silverman was injured in the shoot-out with a graze wound to his head and thumb. He was too shaken up to speak today

Plotts left the scene in restraints. Investigators say he had a troubled past. Even after being shot three times he was still aggressive. Investigators say another case worker and doctor had to wrestle him to the ground.

His day of anger did claim one life. He shot his 53-year-old case worker Theresa Hunt in the head killing her instantly.

Doctor Silverman and other witnesses may have helped prevent a bigger tragedy.
