Rescued Shelties Up For Adoption

Posted: Updated:

56 Shelties rescued from a burning home in unincorporated Riverside County over the weekend have been taken to the Department of Animal Services in Riverside County. And there is a lot of interest in these dogs!

Monday morning, when the shelter opened at 11 AM, 50 to 100 people were already in line waiting to go inside and take a look at the rescued animals.

23 have been cleared for adoption, but because there is so much interest, there is already a wait list to adopt. There are at least three people interested in each dog... and the wait list extends beyond that.

Kim McWhorter, who works at the shelter, says the overall condition of the dogs is good. They were well-nourished, the main issues are grooming and maintenance that needs to be taken care of, such as mats on their body and long grown nails. Volunteers on Monday spent time clipping, brushing, and cleaning the dogs... getting them ready for their forever homes later this week.

The other 33 Shelties are still being evaluated by veterinarians. Vets are assessing their health and temperament. Those deemed not fit for a home at the moment will go to rescue groups to be rehabilitated. However some of the animals are expected to go up for adoption in the coming days. When that happens, Riverside County Department of Animal Services is expecting another flood of interested Sheltie lovers to be visiting their shelter.
