ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - An organization that works to help refugees settle in the United States says it's planning to open an office in Athens.

International Rescue Committee regional director Ellen Beattie tells the Athens Banner-Herald the organization has been considering opening an office in Athens for about five years, and the organization's Athens office is expected to open by the end of the year.

Beattie says small towns are navigable and offer refugees an easier transition to life in America. She says college towns also offer a more international flavor because of academic staff and schools offering language resources that new refugees rely on.

Beattie says IRC staff have already met with county, school and health department officials to prepare to address the needs of refugees who settle in the Athens area.
