Detroit to launch new water leak reporting app

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) - Water has been shut off to thousands of Detroit residents in recent months. Despite protests, more shutoffs are expected. So, what about water that's running non-stop inside abandoned homes? Soon there will be a new way to stop that, too.

We visited a house on Schaefer on Detroit's west side that's all boarded up. You can't see the problem but you can hear it! Water is rushing inside. The running water in that house and others is drowning the water department's finances and is a big reason why many customers are treading water. In the hopes of stemming the tide, the Water Dept. is launching a smart phone app so people can better report the problem properties.

D'Angelo Clemons wishes the app was around a few months ago. He's been surrounded by abandoned homes with running water and they've cost him in more ways than one.

"Drug users broke in to this house and stripped it. The water flooded and it came over into my house," he says. "I woke up in the morning and my furnace is not working and my hot water tank is not working. And how long had that house been empty? For months."

He says another house across the street has been empty for two years. A source says the water has been running for at least a week. The launch of the smart phone app comes as outrage grows over the Water Department shutting off service to customers with unpaid bills. The department is owed nearly $90 million and has recouped almost $2 million since the shutoffs began.

The new smart phone app is expected to be unveiled on Tuesday.
