TAMPA (FOX 13) -

A 15-year-old teenager from Tampa who garnered international attention after his beating by Israeli police officers has returned home.

Family and friends of Tariq Abu Khdeir cheered and hugged the teen as he made his way through a crowd of reporters at Tampa International Airport late Wednesday night.

"It feels so good to be back in Tampa, I can't put it into words," Khdeir said.

Since a July 3rd video of the beating went viral, the family in Tampa described having sleepless nights. The video showed Tariq being kicked by Israeli police after protesting the death of his cousin.

“I was in a new place and suddenly I was attacked by police. It was by far the scariest thing that has ever happened to me,” Khdeir said.

The teen said he is changed by the experience and “ will never think of freedom in the same way.” He thanked supporters for their thoughts and prayers. He is looking forward to fishing and spending time with friends.

Though Khdeir was never formally charged, an Israeli court ordered the him to serve nine days of house arrest. Police insisted he threw rocks; his family insisted he didn't. The State Department condemned the beating.

The family says their focus now is getting medical attention for his injuries. The director for CAIR-Tampa (Council on American-Islamic Relations) said there are meetings planned with medical specialists.

Khdeir experienced head trauma and received stitches to his face in Israel.
