TAMPA (FOX 13) -
State wildlife officials are investigating a video that appears to show someone dousing a tortoise with rubbing alcohol and setting it on fire.
According to the MyFWC Facebook page, the video began circulating on Facebook last night.
The video, which FOX 13 is not showing because of its disturbing nature, appears to show two women setting the small gopher tortoise on fire. They then pick it up and hurl it to the ground twice, and eventually stomp it to death.
FWC posted the information on its Facebook page and is asking for tips to find out who did it. FWC officials contacted Wednesday afternoon by FOX 13 said that investigators believe they know who did it.
They say gopher tortoises are a threatened species, and it is against the law to kill, harass or destroy them, their eggs or burrows.
They say they are also consulting with the state attorney’s office about what charges to file.
