TAMPA (FOX 13) -

A lightning strike during the midday storms may be what sparked a fire at the University Club Apartments on Wednesday.

According to a Hillsborough County fire official, someone reported the fire just before noon. The caller said smoke and flames were coming from one of the buildings just after a strike of lightning hit the roof.

Fire rescue crews arrived and got straight to work, tackling the flames from both the exterior and the interior of the building.

Firefighters had to pull ceilings down in some of the units as they searched for extension flames.

They said the building houses a total of eight apartments, but have not yet stated how many were damaged.

FOX 13 has a crew at the scene and will continue with updates as they become available.
