TAMPA (FOX 13) -

In Tampa, a bolt of lightning knocked two men off their feet Wednesday afternoon.

They were underneath a carport as the storm was moving into Hillsborough County.

It happened off Sherwick Drive and Roxbury, north of Martin Luther King Blvd.

The lightning strike knocked them to the ground.

One of the men couldn't feel his legs and was taken to Tampa General Hospital.

His friend described what happened.

“We literally watched the lightning bolt smack right next to his car,” said Matthew Spence. . “It sent me literally three feet back holding on to my friend, we both flew from this side of my carport all the way to the other side just sitting there stunned, couldn't even do anything.”

Spence’s mom came outside and called 911.

He says his friend was wearing cowboy boots with metal studs, and paramedics say that made the impact of the strike even worse.

There’s no word yet on his condition.
