PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Already this year there have been 81 drowning incidents in Maricopa County, 28 of those are fatalities.

The Phoenix Fire Department reminds everyone how dangerous the water can be.

My mom taught me how to swim. Nine-year-old Una Borders is a natural in the water. She takes swim lessons on a regular basis at the Encanto Park Pool, but she wasn't always this skilled.

"In California when we lived there I forgot my floaty, and I almost drowned," said Borders.

Mom Kyla watches from the sidelines, always mindful of the dangers that surround water.

"It's scary because like last Sunday we were at the pool, and all the parents were paying attention, it took one second for a child to jump in," said Kyla Borders.

That little girl is ok, but Phoenix Fire says many others are not as lucky. Crews respond to multiple calls on a daily basis, the department says adult supervision, barriers, and classes ar key.

"It's gotten to the point where we call it a crisis," said Captain Benjamin Jaminsantillan.

While the Phoenix Fire Department stresses that all three, the ABC's of drowning, are important they say classes give both parents and kids confidence.

"It's such a silent thing that you can't hear the child is under water, and you can't hear it happening," said Jamisantillan.

Borders is already teaching Una's three-year-old brother Coen to swim. Taking every precaution she can to make sure she can hear them in an emergency.
