Chasing monsoon storms: Valley photographer captures the season

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Photographer Michael Oblinski is packing up his gear for another day of chasing monsoon storms. So far this year's season has not disappointed him.

"This one was really cool," said Olbinski.

He followed the dust storm last Thursday as it approached the valley. He captured the storm in a photo from I-10 and captured a time lapse as it moved over downtown Phoenix.

It's all about being in the right place at the right time.

"A lot of it is based off of experience and kind of the typical way the monsoon happens here," he said.

His first pictures to grab major attention were of the huge dust storm in July, 2011.

"It has always fascinated me, but I probably never knew you could do anything with it," said Olbinski.

Now his SUV is outfitted with a laptop and video camera for forecasts and live streaming out in the field. His camera gear is also impressive. His storm chasing has taken him across Arizona and to other states.

"I have kind of described it as going from Arizona to the plains, as like going from the minors to the major leagues. Out here they are not always as picturesque but I have gotten on really good picturesque storms," he said.

In one set of photos, he combined 30 of them to create one dramatic image.

"I started following people that were chasing storms and shooting lightning, and I got inspired by what they were doing and thought, "wow, I want to do that, it just looks like the ultimate fun for me," he said.
