Police: Liquid Synthetic Drug Pops Up On Atlantic City Boardwalk

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - A substance on the A.C. boardwalk is causing problems for teens and police.

Police say it's all because of a liquid form of synthetic marijuana they haven't seen in Atlantic City before.

Agents recently busted a business they say gave it to teens in a "hookah pen."

Fox 29's Shawnette Wilson has the story.

"I seen it on the Internet, but I've never seen it in the stores," said Jackie Torres. She's shocked to hear about about a liquid substance Atlantic City Police say caused two teens to get sick. One had to go to the hospital.

Police say last month workers at Angels and Saints on the boardwalk offered a 16 and 17-year-old hookah pens with an unknown substance to try.

"It does surprise me because it's a lot of teenagers out here all the time out here on the boardwalk and they come to Atlantic City just to have fun so it's not right that they would do that." said Torres.

Police later determined the liquid contained synthetic cannabinoid also commonly known as synthetic marijuana but in a liquid form. Police say it's not as common as the form once sold under names such as K2 and banned in New Jersey two years ago. However, there are plenty of YouTube videos about the liquid form.

"Yeah I've heard about it. They can put the synthetic weed, the liquid weed or the dabs in it," said Brianna Bauer visiting from Ohio.

During a raid of Angels and Saints, police say they found five bottles of the liquid labeled "not for human consumption". The owner and a store clerk were arrested and the store's license was suspended pending the outcome of criminal charges. It's scary to some.

"Anyone can really put any liquid form into it it doesn't have to be marijuana or any tobacco really," said Lindsay Seaber from Ohio.

Meanwhile, police also say a week and a half ago they were led to the Boardwalk Outlet store where they say undercover officers were offered a substance they were told would get them buzzed. It turned out to be synthetic marijuana in its original form.

Atlantic City Police say this is the first time they've seen synthetic marijuana in the liquid form in the city.
