Swimmer attacked by shark, happened off the coast of Manhattan Beach

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - It happened on one of the most popular beaches in Los Angeles, Manhattan Beach.

After an encounter with a great white shark, the victim is considering himself pretty lucky.

Video taken as a call goes out that no swimmer wants to hear. "Hey, get out of the water, shark!"

"I was staring at the shark eyeball to eyeball, it was absolutely horrific... I really thought I was seeing my last moments of life," said Steve Robles.

Robles showed off the teeth marks on his stomach and back. The seven foot long shark was hooked by fisherman on the nearby Manhattan Beach pier. It swam right towards Robles, and he fought it off.

"I used this hand to grab the nose of the shark and to try and pry it off the chest," he said.

Some witnesses claimed the fishermen were chumming for sharks; chumming is throwing out bloody bait to attract them, and it is an illegal practice at the pier. Investigators however said they found no evidence of that happening.

"We interviewed every fisherman out there to get the full story, and no one is being detained at this point," said an official.
