Storms can't stop the celebrations

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Thousands braved the thunder to take in a celebration for America's birthday Friday night. As many as 15,000 people were expected at Coachman Park in Clearwater.

Storms soaked many of the revelers, but didn't stop FOX 13's own John Wilson and Mary K from performing with the Mostly Pops Orchestra.

The rousing show was followed by the largest fireworks display in the Bay Area.

It was all the more meaningful for veterans in the crowd. But Tom McAvoy said America has changed since he fought in the second world war.

"We can do better in several areas. The reason is there doesn't seem to be spirit of cooperation, unity and loyalty that they had in World War II," he said.

Other displays drew crowds in Tampa, St. Petersburg, and several other cities in the area.
