Thunderstorms hit New York, New Jersey

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The National Weather Service issued several weather alerts -- including Flood Watches and Warnings and Severe Thunderstorms Warnings -- for a second day in a row for the New York and New Jersey area because of powerful storms.

The Flash Flood Watch remained in effect for certain counties until Friday, July 4, at noon.

The NWS even issued Tornado Warnings for counties in upstate New York and central New Jersey for short periods on Thursday.

The storms delays hundreds of flights in the area airports. Power went out at Newark Liberty Airport for a brief time, knocking out A/C.

In New York City, flooding knocked out service on the 1/2/3 subway lines between Times Square and West 96 Street.

"A cold front will slowly move across the area Friday morning." the NWS said in a statement. "Showers and scattered thunderstorms will linger overnight behind the main line. A total of one to three inches of rainfall is expected with locally higher amounts."

The strong storms dropped torrential rain, triggering flash floods in certain communities on Wednesday and Thursday.

The storms knocked out power to a few hundred customers in parts of the area.
