Charlie Crist in support of gay marriage

ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) -
Gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist wore his support for the LGBT community on his sleeve.

Standing in front of a room full of St. Pete Pride attendees he spoke of equality and his support for gay marriage.

"I think it's the right thing to do. As President Obama said, who are we to tell other people who to love," he said.

Currently 19 states allow gay marriage and Florida could be next as a state Supreme Court decision on the issue is expected on July 2nd.

"It's a sad state of affairs people who love each other and want to make that commitment have to do it in other communities than ours," said St. Pete Mayor Rick Kriseman.

The looming decision is likely to create even more of a buzz at this year's St. Pete Pride festival.

The big parade is Saturday night, more than 100,000 people are expected.

Earlier today, for the first time ever, the gay pride flag was raised above St. Pete City Hall.

"It is an event about diversity, about free speech, and an event about freedom so all that's happening over 3 days," said Eric Skains, St. Pete Pride's Executive Director.
