A Florida trucker is behind bars, accused of strangling and kidnapping a woman who refused to have sex with him.
According to the Winter Haven Police Department, Eddie Sellers of Okeechobee was spotted and arrested in Alachua County on Tuesday after an alert was issued to law enforcement.
It all started a week ago, detectives say, when Sellers picked up a woman in Tennessee while en route to his trucking depot in Winter Haven. A few nights later, after arriving in Florida, the pair got into a fight when Sellers demanded sex and the woman refused, biting his tongue when he tried to kiss her.
Sellers allegedly got violent, beating her and strangling her until she was unconscious. Police say he then dragged her to the showers inside the truck terminal and immersing her in cold water to wake her up before forcing her back to the truck, where she wasn't allowed to leave.
The woman, whom police did not name, even said she was forced to urinate in a foam cup.
Sellers eventually stopped at a truck stop along I-75 in Marion County to gas up. The victim pretended to be sleep and when Sellers got out the truck to pay for the fuel, she was able to get away and eventually flag down a deputy.
Farther north on I-75, a Florida Highway Patrol trooper spotted Sellers’ truck as it headed north. With the help of the Alachua County Sheriff's Office, Sellers was arrested. Investigators say he told them he'd had a monthlong relationship with the woman, and he blamed the injuries on her falling down while she was drunk.
The 40-year-old will be taken back to Polk County to face felony charges of kidnapping and battery.
The victim, meanwhile, remains in an Ocala Hospital where she is expected to recover from her injuries.
