Pasco mom looking for help after dog attack

Posted: Updated:

The mother of a 7-year-old girl attacked by a pit bull last week says she's running out of options to fix her daughter's face.

"I can't afford plastic surgery, and Medicaid's not going to cover it," Fannie Posada said. "Obviously the owner of the dog is not financially stable to pay for my daughter's face to be fixed. She's gonna need reconstructive plastic surgery."

Posada rushed her daughter Salena to the hospital late Wednesday night. Doctors put 28 stitches in her left cheek, cleaned her up, and sent her home.

Posada is worried about not only the emotional scar from the attack, but also those scars she believes her daughter will have the rest of her life.

"I want to make her feel beautiful again. I don't want to have her waking up in the middle of the night screaming and crying and begging to understand how to deal with that," Posada explained.

As is routine, several children were playing with the pit bull named "Bubba" last Wednesday. Salena leaned in to give Bubba a hug goodbye and he latched onto her face.

Her mother was nearby and rushed over to her, wrapped a towel around her face, and took off toward the hospital.

The dog's owner, Jason Delmont, was holding Bubba on a leash at the time. He said after the attack he offered to pay for the child's medical bills, but the gesture was declined.

He also said he was willing to put the dog down, but no one wants that.

Since the attack, Delmont explained, he has had nothing but sympathy for Salena and her family.

Pasco Animal Services placed the dog on a 10-day rabies quarantine inside Delmont's home. Once that period expires this weekend, Animal Services will likely return to investigate whether or not the dog is considered dangerous.

The attack fits the mold for Bubba to be considered dangerous, but since Animal Services has no prior bites or attacks on record, that could play into their decision.

Salena gets her stitches out Friday, and her mother is asking the community for help in paying for plastic surgery.
