Girl nearly drowns, video captures her falling in and being rescued

Posted: Updated:
LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. -  Surveillance video of a pool party at a Litchfield Park home showed how quickly a fun day can almost turn into a tragedy.

There were plenty of people around, but the four year-old who did not know how to swim got into the pool unnoticed. She jumped in and began to struggle to get above the water.

It's scary to see on the video, witnesses say it was more frightening to see it play out in person. Fortunately the four year-old survived the near drowning.

Officials say the child was only under for about ten seconds, any longer, and it might have been a very different story. The family is hoping the video shows why children must be watched around water.

In the video, you see parents are watching their kids but a little girl snuck past an adult opening the pool fence and she later jumped into the pool.

She never came up and when the adult at the pool watching his kid jumped in to rescue her.

Four year-old Ellie doesn't remember the day she nearly drowned. Her Uncle Dat Tran's house said if she was under a few seconds under it could have been tragic.

"I can't imagine I think we would definitely have a funeral plan thereafter," he said.

Jason Ganzer is the family friend who was in the right place at the right time to pull her out of the water.

"She was spitting up water but after she had got the water out it was like nothing happened at all, she was completely oblivious to how serious the situation was," said Ganzer.

Tran thought he did everything right planning for the party, and he had a gate around the pool and nearly 30 adults around watching.

"In this case, someone held the door open, and she snuck right under," said Tran.

Now he says he'll hire a dedicated lifeguard for any party, knowing that anything can happen in a split second.

"We have to keep eyes on our kids around the water," he said.

"Jason really saved someone's life, she's forever in his debt, we are forever in debt to Jason for pulling her out of the water," said Tran.

The child's uncle said she might have jumped in the water thinking she still had floaties on from earlier in the day. Her family said she would be getting swim lessons soon.
