Special Olympic's Come To An End With Friday's Closing Ceremonies

TRENTON, N.J. -

The Special Olympic Games came to a close Friday.

But these games were about more than just athleticism and competition.

As Fox 29's Shawnette Wilson reported, these games were also about inspiration.

Brandon Kreckler of Whitehall is proud of his week at the Special Olympics held in New Jersey.

His team won a gold medal on the state level to make it here to the national games.

"It's a big deal. They're treating us like royalty here," said Brandon.

He competed in soccer on the Lehigh County team for Team PA.

"We played against Maryland, Texas for our prelims and then New Jersey."

And from this week's competitions, Brandon proudly showed off a silver medal.

Friday night more than 3,000 athletes gathered for the closing ceremony at the Sun Center in Trenton.

They celebrated in style with entertainment and praise from professional athletes.

It was a big party after a week of competition in a variety of sports with athletes from all over the United States.

"What we saw was their passion, dedication, and we revealed America's Champions this week," said TJ Nelligan, Chairman and CEO of the Special Olympic's USA Games.

Brandon's mother Joan and his girlfriend Ali were there for support.

Joan says it's been an exciting journey for her son who has also competed in aquatics, gymnastics and basketball since he started the Special Olympics at just five years old.

"It's very emotional to see what all the athletes have accomplished, they've come a long way I know because I've come along way with my son to get him to this point," explained Joan.

Athletes also say building friendships is a big part of this event. This year's theme for the closing ceremony was Inclusion and Friendship.
