Detroit church asks for blighted building next door to be torn down

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - Neighbors and folks visiting Greater Marion Chapel on Grand River Avenue say they are sick and tired of begging the city to tear down a burned-out, blighted building that has been sitting there for years.

"Wait until you see up close, and it's horrible," says Kevin Morse of Greater Marion Chapel.

Open seven days for rats, trash and who knows what else.

"You never know what could happen. It could be a dead body; anything could be in there and especially not next to a church," says Kayla Morse, a church attendee.

"It's embarrassing. I mean, this is a place of worship," says Kevin.

Forty Minutes Cleaners is decaying along Grand River and Coyle avenues on Detroit's west side.

"It's just nasty and disgusting," says Kevin.

For years the building was abandoned, then it went up in flames two years ago.

"It got stripped; it got gutted; it got burned down," Kevin says.

Now it is a shell of what it used to be.

Neighbors say although it's placed on the demolition list, it's an unsightly symbol of more empty promises.

"One side of the building is already collapsed in," says neighbor Danielle Scott.

"You can't build a downtown up and then still have the neighborhoods, where everybody stays, in disarray and blight," says Kevin.

He says his calls to the city go unanswered, adding that Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano even visited the burned-out building a year ago.

"Nothing has happened. You know, we got some promises. Nothing has happened so far," Kevin says.

After a call from Fox 2 Friday the mayor's office says they're quickly looking into the matter.

"Please tear it down before somebody gets hurt, someone will get raped in there," says Jahmal Goldman, who also attends the church.

But these folks say with a school just two blocks away they shouldn't have to beg the city to get this torn down.

"What is taking so long?" Scott asks. "You should be ashamed of yourself. You're knocking down everything else and this is one building that really needs to be taken care of."
