A neighborhood in Lutz is on edge after a Hillsborough County man entered his ex-wife's home, stabbed her boyfriend to death, then tried to take his own life.
According to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office, the alleged stabbing happened around 11:45 Thursday night in the 24000 block of Oakhaven Court.
"It's just crazy. You never really know whats going to happen in your neighborhood," said Barbara Korpi, who was staying across the street from the scene.
Erick Reinhart was likely under the influence of the alcohol when he came to Amy Reinhart's home and confronted her boyfriend Alex Iliff, according to investigators.
Amy and her sister were hiding in another room with the door locked when Erick stabbed Iliff to death, then ran to the bathroom to attempt suicide. Amy's sister called 911.
"He stabs himself several times in the stomach. He does one across his throat, and he's in there bleeding," said Sheriff Chris Nocco. "While we're in the bathroom confronting the suspect. He's on the floor yelling, 'Kill me, kill me.' Our deputies don't do mercy killings."
Reinhart was airlifted to a local hospital in critical condition. He faces murder charges.
According to Nocco, Reinhart and his ex-wife were separated over the winter, and Reinhart had been held under the Baker Act around that time due to his mental state. The couple's divorce had been finalized in recent days.
The two shared custody of their children, a 5- and 6-year-old boy and girl, according to Erick Reinhart's mother.
The kids were in their father's care at the time of the alleged killing. Investigators found them locked in Reinhart's apartment in Hillsborough County, alone and unharmed.
Neighbors express concern for those children's futures.
"I'm so sorry. I don't know how those kids are going to feel now because they know," said Lucy Guzman, a neighbor.
