Delays in George Washington Bridge repairs

Posted: Updated:

For the third day in a row, construction crews repairing the upper level of the George Washington Bridge were not able to complete their work by 5 a.m., before the morning rush hour.

Construction crews from American Bridge Company have been replacing rusted six-foot sections of the upper deck. The work is supposed to be from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. as crews block three of the four lanes on each side of the upper level. They have been late finishing and this has caused massive traffic jams.

AAA New York says this is representative of how the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has gotten away from it core mission of transportation and ended up owning real estate, such as the World Trade Center and waste-transfer stations.

AAA New York wants New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to sign a bill that just passed both the New York Assembly and Senate calling for an oversight commission to check on the Port Authority work and finances.

A spokesman says the Port Authority is meeting with the construction company Thursday to find out why it has not been able to complete the work in time.

The Port Authority says that it was told Tuesday night that a steel plate had to be cut to fit into the bridge. Wednesday night, a steel plate had to be bolted in three spots instead of the normal two, which caused delays.

The construction company has both incentives to finish early and penalties if it does not complete each day on time, the Port Authority says.
