Missing teen, sex offender found in Louisiana

Posted: Updated:
VALRICO (FOX 13) - The search for a missing teen from Valrico and a registered sex offender ended in Louisiana Thursday morning.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, 16-year-old Ashley Lyon and 41-year-old Steven Patrick Myers were taken to the hospital after a lengthy police chase on a Louisiana highway Thursday morning.

Hillsborough sheriff’s spokesperson Col. Donna Lusczynski said Ashley was stabbed ten times in her torso. She was hospitalized in critical condition, and has since been upgraded to stable condition, according to her father, Roger Lyon.

Myers was taken to the hospital with self-inflicted stab wounds, Lusczynski said.

Authorities in Louisiana said the two were spotted sometime after 1 a.m., when Ashley walked into a truck stop near Baton Rouge. Patrons there alerted deputies, saying they recognized her because of the extensive media coverage of her disappearance.

Deputies found them a short time later, driving down the road in a stolen pickup truck. Sirens blared and lights flashed, but deputies say Myers refused to pull over.

The ensuing chase lasted 40 minutes. Myers allegedly hit several cars and it took stop sticks to finally end the wild ride.

"This chase was one where this guy was not going to stop until the vehicle gave out on him," said Sheriff Brett Stasi of Iberville Parish. "He dodged at vehicles, he hit vehicles, trying to knock them into the way of deputies that were chasing him. He swerved at 18-wheelers trying to make them wreck...He was running on rims until the end."

Deputies at the scene said Myers got out of the truck with a knife in hand, yelling, “shoot me!” When officers did not fire, he began stabbing himself in the torso until officers got to him, stopped him and arrested him.

In the meantime, others at the scene tended to Ashley, who had been stabbed several times. They said she was taken to a nearby hospital and listed in critical condition.

Ashley’s father mother flew to Louisiana earlier today. According to her father, she has been diagnosed with bi-polar disorder, which he said made her more vulnerable to predators.

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s spokesperson Col. Donna Lusczynski said Myers and Ashley “jointly planned” their disappearance, and that the case was not an abduction.

“However, it was a situation where a 41-year-old sexual offender manipulated a 16-year-old,” she said.

Lusczynski said investigators will also travel to Louisiana to interview Ashley. Additional charges could be brought against Myers after that, she said.

In Hillsborough County, Myers is charged with interference with child custody, attempted unlawful sexual activity with a minor and traveling to meet a minor. In Louisiana, he is charged with attempted first degree murder, aggravated property damage and resisting arrest.
