Plant City woman pleads not guilty in donation jar theft

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Rhonda Allen told a judge Tuesday she's not guilty of urging her 5-year-old granddaughter to steal.

But it’s hard to dispute it when the crime is on video.

Plant City detectives say Allen coaxed the child to put the donation jar in the shopping cart.

Police say the little girl did what she was told, then grandma covered it with a bag of groceries, hiding it from everyone --except for the camera.

The donations belonged to Mildred Diaz's 15-year-old daughter, who is battling Lupus.

"That’s sad, that’s very sad. How to do call yourself a mother, let alone a grandmother, showing your granddaughter how to steal? Where’s her mother?" Diaz said.

Allen was arrested less than an hour after FOX 13 broadcast the video back in April. Viewers knew who she was and flooded the Plant City Police Department with calls.

She is facing felony theft charges and, if convicted, could see some prison time.
