Upper Darby Police Search For Suspect In Attempted Child Luring Incidents

Posted: Updated:
UPPER DARBY, Pa. - Families in one local community are on alert tonight after reports of a man trying to lure young girls into his car.

Upper Darby Police say they are looking for a driver of a newer model, dark colored car, which investigators say has been sighted in two potential child luring incidents within blocks of each other and near a local middle school.

“Our goal is to identify this individual, so we can check him out,” said Upper Darby Police Superintendent Mike Chitwood.

Chitwood says late last week a 12-year-old girl, who was walking near Shadeland and State Road, spotted a car circling the block three times. The driver stopped in what she described as a black Ford Taurus or Mercury Milan with a keypad on the door frame.

“Anytime you get these kinds of things with children you have to do a full court press, you just have to find out who they are and what it's about,” said Chitwood.

Late last month, there was a similar incident, which involved a 12-year-old girl who was walking near Huey and Edmonds Street in the Drexel Hill section.

“The operator of the vehicle rolled the window down and asked the young girl if she needed a ride," said Chitwood.

Chitwood says now is a good time to talk to children.

“It’s scary,” said resident John Marcantuno.

Marcantuno lives right at Huey and Edmonds. He has a 13-year-old sister and these reports have him deeply concerned.

“Makes me want to walk her to school every day, not around here, never imagined anything like that,” he said.

Marcantuno plans to talk to his little sister about the incidents and urge her to be careful.

“I guess I have to step up and make sure she always is with somebody,” said Marcantuno. “Keep on going, notify the closest adult that you come to and have police come and respond right away.”
