A severely injured sea turtle is safe after being rescued by Coast Guard crew members off the coast of Longboat Pass, Florida, Sunday.
A good Samaritan notified the Coast Guard in St. Petersburg, Florida, of an injured sea turtle with a a spear penetrating the shell and was unable to dive under the surface because of air leaking into the shell.
Coast Guard Station Cortez crew members were able to be safely recover the turtle without further injury.
The turtle was transferred to Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium in Sarasota Pass, Florida in stable condition.
Officials at the aquarium will examine the turtle to determine the extent of its injuries.
