Dog wanders into Polk home, kills nursing cat

Posted: Updated:

It seems like something out of a horror movie: A pit bull walks through your front door and creates chaos, killing your pet cat, who just happens to be nursing five kittens.

Michelle Welch says it happened to her and her fiancé earlier this week after their air conditioner broke.

The mother cat, named Mustache, was her fiancé's favorite.

"She was his baby," Welch told FOX 13. "He is horrified because one of his favorite things to do was, when he was eating, she would come up on his shoulder and he would feed her."

Welch says it happened in an instant: At first, the female pit bull seemed docile as a lamb, but soon turned into a lion and pounced on the momma cat.

When she took the cat's head in her mouth, Welch's fiancé picked up the lid of a heavy Dutch oven and began pounding the dog with it. It made no difference; the dog kept attacking until the cat was on its last legs.

A short time later, it died.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office impounded the dog, which turned out to be pregnant herself and going to give birth soon. After the puppies are weaned, the pit bull will be put down if no one claims her.

The puppies will be handed over to a pit bull rescue, which can hopefully place them.

In the meantime, the SPCA is stepping in to help. It will be providing medical services for the kittens. It will also install a memorial brick at its facility in south Lakeland in memory of Mustache.

Donna Wood of the Polk Sheriff's Office says all this could have been prevented.

"We are looking at a dog that was roaming free. It should not have been," she offered.
