The Bucs' offensive line is undergoing a big overhaul since the team cut veteran starters Davin Joseph and Donald Penn this offseason.
The Bucs already set three O-line starting jobs: Right tackle Demar Dotson, left tackle Anthony Collins, and center Evan Dietrich-Smith. Still, that leaves a few starting positions open, and that's the biggest question that needs answering this summer: Who completes the starting five?
Training camp should give players the best opportunity to sort out the starting offensive line for coaches. New assistant George Warhop says players are putting in the work and heading in the right direction after three days of minicamp this week.
"I will say this, you know, everybody's doing a fantastic job. I think our tackles are doing a great job. Evan (Dietrich-Smith) has been fantastic. All the guys rolling in there at guard, they're showing their best. I mean it's going to be tough and that's what we want. We want them to make it hard on us and so far they've done that."
The Bucs' fifth-round draft pick, Kadeem Edwards, lines up at left guard with Carl Nicks still out, recovering from a toe infection. Head coach Lovie Smith says the rookie impresses early.
"Good body, smart guy... he's shown good agility in the drills working with Coach Warhop, but the next step is for him to get into more of the live action with the rest of the group."
The Bucs do expect Carl Nicks back for training camp and Coach Warhop says that would be like Christmas in July for him. Nicks returns the compliment.
"I honestly think he could be probably one of the best offensive line coaches I ever had," said Nicks. "He does a good job explaining, he's down to earth. He's just relatable, so I like him."
The Bucs' new starting center agrees: "He ain't gonna lie to you. He's a very true man, great coach, knows what he's talking about, been around the league for a very long time so you can take him at his word."
The Bucs' offensive linemen know actions speak loudest. They play to make a new statement this season.
