Special Olympics: Mich. athlete empowered by powerlifting

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - Michigan will be well represented at the Special Olympic USA Games. A young man from Plymouth proves you don't have to be big to be powerful.

Twenty-eight-year-old Kyle Siarto is a powerlifter. He's been perfecting his powerlifting for 14 years, and when he walks up to the almost 300 pound bar his physical and mental strength kick in.

Powerlifting has empowered Kyle.

"Kyle used to be very, very shy. He would hide behind me and never quite felt he fit in. I think it was that, 'I know I'm different.' Once we joined Special Olympics the world opened up to him," says Kathy Siarto, Kyle's mother.

She is a second grade teacher at Village Oaks in Novi. When she's not in this classroom she's coaching, volunteering or just cheering on Kyle and other Special Olympics athletes.

"This past summer games one of our athletes fell down twice, got up and finished. The crowd stood on their feet and cheered. I'm up there bawling. I'm just, it's just touching, the effort they put in and the joy they feel," she says.

No stranger to medals, Kyle is going for the gold again representing Michigan in the Special Olympic USA Games, proving his disability does not limit his potential.

"Back when he was born I had a doctor tell me, 'You know Mrs. Siarto, many of these children have to be institutionalized," and I want to find that doctor today and say, 'Look at this young man who can now lift 280 pounds.' So, yeah, he's been an amazing blessing; I am so lucky," says his mother.

Fox has proudly partnered with the 2014 USA Special Olympic Games. Opening ceremonies are this weekend in New Jersey then the games begin on Monday.
