TAMPA (FOX 13) -

The tugboat industry plays an important role in both the Manatee and Tampa Port Authorities. It's responsible for towing large ships in and out of the bay every day, and now, it will take on a new responsibility.

Thursday morning, Marine Towing of Tampa Bay showed off a new member of its fleet, a state-of-the-art tugboat named “Patriot” that happens to be one of a few in the U.S. capable of fighting fires in the open ocean.

The $9 million tugboat can spray nearly 12,000 gallons of water per minute at a distance of 400 feet. To put that in perspective, it can fill the average pool in about one minute.

The 93-inch long, 5000-horsepower tugboat will add to the continued growth at all ports and facilities around Tampa Bay, and will also provide additional firefighting capabilities for Hillsborough County Fire Rescue.

Marine Towing has been contracted by HCFR to be utilized as their fire boat, should they ever need it.
