Police say they have arrested a suspect in connection with the murder of a Tampa police officer’s son.
Officers arrested 30-year-old Gregory Charlemagne. They say he turned himself in.
James Williams, 28, was shot to death inside an apartment within the Park Terrace Apartment complex, located at 5111 Palm Park Ct.
Police say Charlemagne and Miriame Bernard had dated for seven years, but recently split.
James Williams was Bernard’s new boyfriend and was living with her.
The Tampa Police Department confirmed that Williams was the son of Officer Betty Williams.
Investigators say Charlemagne came into the apartment, got into an altercation with Williams, and shot him.
They say he later admitted it to detectives.
Charlemagne is charged with 2nd degree murder.
"I was stunned. I was like, what? I was so surprised because around here is very quiet," said Jane Dubique.
Dubique lives just below apartment 205 where Williams was shot to death early Wednesday morning.
"After 5 in the morning, I heard banging on the door," she said.
Police say Charlemagne showed up there looking for his ex-girlfriend Miriame Bernard, who is also the mother of his two children.
Inside, Charlemagne pushed her up against a wall, according to police, and that's when they say her new boyfriend (Williams) stepped in to help.
Officials say he and Charlemagne got into it and Williams wound up shot.
"I was shocked. I was surprised it happened here," said Tiffany Mcpherson.
Police swarmed the scene and soon found out the shooting hit close to home. William's mother is Betty Williams a Tampa Police officer.
"So obviously, that is something very sad for the Tampa Police Department family. This is a tragic situation all around," said TPD spokesperson Andrea Davis.
Charlemagne turned himself in. He's charged with 2nd degree murder, and officials say he's admitted to the killing.
"It is so scary because I've never been so close to where a shooting happened and someone got killed," Mcpherson said.
