NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - The NetFlix series 'Orange Is The New Black' has reached a cult following with fans on marathon viewing sessions of season two immediately after its recent release.

One of the biggest draws of the show which is based on imprisoned women is transgender star Laverne Cox who plays 'Sofia.'

Cox's character got the attention of Time magazine who placed her on their cover and next to the title 'The Transgender Tipping Point; America's Next Civil Rights Frontier.'

“(In the issue ) there is a lot of basic things about who transgender people are. The issue tells the story of a number of transgender people, their struggles and their stories… hopefully the misconceptions we have about people will melt away. I didn’t make the Time 100 even though I was no. 5 in a fan poll. WhereIsLaverneCox went viral and I think that had something to do with it. I’m really deeply honored and I want to thank the fans and Time magazine," said Cox.

The Marymount Manhattan College graduate who majored in dance got her first taste of acting on the stage while in school. She quickly fell in love with acting. But for Cox, the road to success has been riddled with abuse, assault and struggle.

"I’ve had a very difficult time. Street harassment has been a huge part of my life. I was kicked on the street once. I was bullied big time as I was growing up; I was beaten up. There were times I was held down and beaten up," said Cox.

She credits her single mother and twin brother-- who played her character pre-transition on the show- for helping survive and thrive.

"I'm very blessed," said Cox.

'Orange Is In The New Black' has been picked up for a third season.
