Prosecutors: video shows former TPD sergeant illegally using food stamps

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Could a newly-released video clip be the smoking gun in a food stamp fraud case involving a Tampa Police Department sergeant fired last year?

The Hillsborough State Attorney's Office says the video shows Lajoyce Houston using an inmate's EBT food stamp card at Walmart.

In the video, you also see her husband: former TPD homicide detective Eric Houston bagging groceries before they leave the store together.

Lajoyce Houston was a sergeant with the Tampa Police Department. She was fired last October after detectives say she was using an inmate’s food stamps.

That's when detectives started looking closer at her husband's possible involvement.

They found none. But Eric Houston was fired by TPD earlier this year after he became the main focus of a federal investigation involving tax fraud.

Court documents show the Houstons may have used the police databases to file fraudulent tax returns using those names.

A federal grand jury continues to investigate; so far no one has been indicted.
