Elderly Polk woman loses thousands in sweepstakes scam

Posted: Updated:

Marguerite Turner is 92 years old and lives her life by the golden rule.

"Do to others what they should do to you, always lived that way so far, been pretty good," she said.

Until recently -- when she found out the hard way that not everyone is so upstanding.

What appeared to be a sweepstakes letter came in the mail to her Polk City home last week.

To her, it seemed legit.

"I was flabbergasted. I've never won anything in my life," she said.

Here's where it gets really fishy -- they told her they needed her to send them money before they would send her the winnings, which they said was about a half million dollars.

The first payment she sent was $900. Then they asked for more, and more, and more.

She ended up spending around $10,000.

The sheriff's office says scams like this are becoming more common in Polk County, and seniors seem to be the easy target.

Turner hopes her story helps others avoid becoming victims.

"Don't send any money to people you don't know. Don't answer the telephone, watch out for sweepstakes," she said.

Officials warn people never to give out personal information to strangers, and to contact law enforcement if you receive a suspicious call or letter.

Because in the end, some old sayings still ring true.

"It was too good to be true," Marguerite says.
