The one player on the Rays team that perhaps had the closest relationship with Don Zimmer is Evan Longoria.
Zimmer mentored Longoria, beginning in his 2008 rookie season and guided him to becoming the All Star that he is today.
Longoria says above all, he looked at Zimmer as a teacher.
“He only said things for the best of reasons, because he wanted to teach, and because he loved the game so much,” Longoria said.
Longoria says he thinks Zimmer would want the mourning period to be brief, and for the game to go on.
“I know that he would want us to continue to move on and move forward and do the things that he appreciated in this game,” Longoria said.
