City sets period of public input for Pier replacement

Posted: Updated:

Would you like a say in what activities are provided by a new St. Pete Pier? Don't blink: your chance is zooming up fast and will fly by.

A "Pier working group" assembled by Mayor Rick Kriseman adopted the administration's tight timetable at a meeting Wednesday afternoon. It decided to host four public forums at four locations around the city between June 16th and June 27th.

The times and locations will be decided next Monday, and public notice will be made by Friday, June 13th.

Kriseman's group includes representatives of several factions that formed after the last attempt to replace the existing St. Pete Pier with a design called the "Lens."

Many citizens complained they had no say in selecting the Lens until it was one of three finalists in an international design competition. One group, Concerned Citizens of St. Petersburg, gathered enough petition signatures to force a public vote, and the Lens was overwhelmingly rejected.

Kriseman wants the working group to find out what functions people would like to see in a new Pier, before starting a new design process.
