Gandy beachgoers should expect changes

It's not the prettiest beach in the Bay Area, but on any given weekend, the strip of sand along Gandy Boulevard is packed with families.

People love the Gandy Beach, also known as Beer Can Beach, for its laid-back atmosphere.

That will soon change.

Several signs now posted at the beach entrance inform folks of county ordinances: No camping, no alcohol, no ATV's, no dumping, no vendors, and no removal of plants -- just to name a few.

There's also no trespassing from dusk until dawn, unless you're fishing.

In an interview with the Tampa Tribune, DOT Spokeswoman Kris Carson wrote, "We have had numerous issues in this area, including people dumping boats and tires, drag-racing, people using ATV's and trashing the beach."

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office will likely patrol the area. There will be a grace period in which deputies will educate beachgoers on the recent changes.
