A murder investigation is underway in Tarpon Springs after a highly-respected doctor was found inside his home on the Anclotte River.
Tarpon Springs Police identified the victim as 74-year-old Steven Schwartz. They say he died of "upper body trauma," and said they don't believe the murder was a random act.
The investigation started Wednesday night after Rebecca Schwartz, the victim’s spouse, returned home.
"She walked in residence, saw that the residence was in disarray, contacted law enforcement backed out of the house," Sgt. Ed Miller told reporters, adding that the first officers on scene also noted the disarray. "We deployed a K9 team because the house is rather large."
They say Schwartz’s body was found near the home's garage.
Tarpon Springs Police Chief Robert Kochen sent an open letter to nearby residents late Thursday afternoon.
"Based on our investigation thus far, we are confident this was not a random act of violence," the chief writes. "This occurrence was focused solely on 1310 Belcher Drive."
That addresses one concern expressed earlier by a neighbor.
"I'd like to know who did this," Patricia Roever told FOX 13 News. "I'd like to know if there's anyone around this neighborhood who's out on the loose that could break into my home or my neighbor’s homes."
It does not resolve her other distress.
"When my son called me at five o'clock this morning, I just cried because my husband was a doctor also and they do such good for people," Roever said.
She and others described the Schwartz's as "a lovely couple" who frequently entertained large groups of people.
