Sources: Handel endorsing Kingston in U.S. Senate runoff

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA - Former Secretary of State Karen Handel will endorse Congressman Jack Kingston Wednesday in the runoff for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination, FOX 5 News has learned.

The endorsement will come at a 1 p.m. news conference at Regent Partners at 3344 Peachtree Street in Atlanta.

The Kingston campaign would not confirm the endorsement Tuesday evening, only saying Kingston will make a “major political announcement.”

Handel finished third in last week’s primary, pulling 21.96 percent of the vote compared to Kingston’s 25.80 percent which placed him in a runoff.

Both trailed the leading vote getter, businessman David Perdue, who pulled 30.64 percent of the vote.

In one of the most heated moments of the primary campaign, Handel blasted Perdue for his criticism of her not having a college degree.

Perdue has portrayed himself as a political outsider who can fix what’s broken in Washington, while Kingston has said he has helped cut millions of dollars from the federal budget while in Congress.

The Republican runoff between Perdue and Kingston will take place on July 22nd, with the winner facing Democratic nominee Michelle Nunn.
