The University of Tampa baseball team heads to Cary, North Carolina, for the Division II National Tournament. The Spartans stayed unbeaten to win this year's South Region Tournament, but they did have to come from behind to win a few games.
Head Coach Joe Urso admitted that was nerve-racking. "They just have that belief that they're gonna win the game late... last three innings, they don't think anyone can beat 'em and hopefully that works to our advantage in the World Series."
UT has won six national baseball titles, including last season. The defending champs think this team has more than the nuts and bolts necessary to win it all again.
"I feel like this team's full of character, full of heart and passion," offered Spartans shortstop Gio Alfonzo. "It's something that you can't really explain because putting it into words isn't right... if you were in the dugout with us and you experienced what we go through and the way we are with each other, it's something amazing. It's magical. It's unreal. I've never played for a team like this before."
The University of Tampa opens the defense of their 2013 national title taking on Southern Indiana Saturday.
Spartans outfielder Stephen Dezzi considers it surreal UT's record stands at an amazing 51 wins, 2 losses heading into this tournament. "I don't know what I would do with two rings because I was here last year and that was the most unbelievable experience for me. And to go out and do it again... that would be unbelievable."
