Professor earns an "F" for fake

LAKELAND (FOX 13) - Students called him professor, but Polk County Investigators are calling him a fraud.

Polk State College Professor David Broxterman was arrested Wednesday.

He’s accused of falsely portraying himself as having a Ph.D. in Business Administration.

His paperwork showed he graduated with honors. Investigators said he was never even enrolled there.

"They didn't check?" said Polk State student Rainbow Williams.

The college isn’t saying exactly how Broxterman fell through the cracks. A spokesperson for Polk State said Broxterman was vetted in-house.

She said the college has hired an outside firm to check out potential job candidates, after it learned about Broxterman.

The State Attorney’s Office in Bartow, which did the investigation, said Broxterman submitted a fake diploma from the University of South Florida.

It contained a number of glaring errors.

  • USF’s President signs diplomas “Judy L. Genshaft” – Broxterman’s was signed “Judith C. Genshaft.”
  • There were only three signatures on Broxterman’s diploma, when there should have been four.
  • The USF seal was wrong. (The real seal is gold; Broxterman’s was black and white.)

Investigators said his transcripts were falsified as well.

He is scheduled to appear before a judge in Bartow on Thursday.
